How does tax planning work in retirement?

Retirement tax planning is about keeping more of what you saved — being intentional about which accounts you draw from and when, so you manage your taxable income year to year. It can affect your tax bracket, how much of your Social Security is taxed, and even your Medicare premiums. The right moves vary by situation.

Why taxes don’t stop when you retire

Withdrawals from pre-tax retirement accounts are generally taxable income. At a set age, the IRS typically requires minimum distributions from those accounts whether you need the money or not. And depending on your total income, part of your Social Security benefit can be taxable too. Together, that means your tax picture keeps moving after the paychecks stop.

The levers people use

There are a handful of common ones: which account you draw from first, whether to convert some pre-tax money to Roth in lower-income years, and how you time income across years so no single year spikes. Which levers help — and how much — depends entirely on your accounts and your income.

Conversions get their own walkthrough on Roth conversions, and the paycheck side is on retirement income planning.

The Medicare link

Higher income can raise your Medicare Part B and Part D premiums through the income-related adjustment called IRMAA, generally based on your income from about two years earlier. That's one more reason people watch which year income lands in. The Medicare hub explains how the parts and premiums fit together.

Common Questions

What people ask us

Why does tax planning matter in retirement?

Because how and when you draw from your accounts affects your tax bracket, how much of your Social Security is taxed, and your Medicare premiums. Small timing choices can add up over a long retirement.

What are RMDs?

Required minimum distributions — amounts the IRS generally requires you to withdraw from pre-tax retirement accounts starting at a set age. They're taxable income, which is why people plan around them.

Can my retirement income raise my Medicare premiums?

Yes. Higher income can increase your Medicare Part B and Part D premiums through IRMAA, generally based on your income from about two years earlier.
